lol!  Yeah, everything on that weekend was 5 by 5!  Stayin' alive... this is Ed "Hollywood" Wright signing off.....

Where do I start?  Kick-ass weekend all the way through until 11.55am on Sunday.  The last 5 mins of the mission for me was just clusterfuck all the way, but hey, I went down in a blaze of glory, Hollywood style!

Not suprisingly, the heli was by far and away the best part of the mission for me, seeing it circle in, and get closer and closer and then almost right on top of us, and knowing I was going up in that just got me G-BUZZing all the way through.   I took the opportunity to do as much aerial recon as I could on the flight over.   The site was cool too, and I loved the initial patrol by Zulu-4-4 through the woods, with the heli going overhead every so often.

Thanks to all who were involved - the Stirling staff, all the TL's, ETS for providing a great enemy force as usual, and of course to the heli crew for all their input.

I'd love to do this every single mission, but unfortunately that would mean I could only afford to come to Stirling 3 times a year......!

Operation Safe Haven, Over View

after much deliberation weather to get involved or not, the decision was made for the british & US governments. With the confirmation of the wide spread violence from region to region since their departure from the Chad by the DBR (Devine brotherhood Of Roy) on what seemed a recruiting mission. Intel was coming in thick & Fast from sources on the ground that the DBR had taken a village in Mboma in the Congo & were taking children to fight as militia & were also capturing volunteer medical staff & UN aid workers.

on the 22nd septermber 2008 operation safe Haven was put into effect.

Strategic Solutions  who were on the ground & were making their way through the Congo towards the village requested assistance on the ground to help oppress the numbers of DBR militia opposing them.

Special forces teams were standing by & once they got the call were flown into the region via heli.
Sabre & Zulu Units hit the ground & trekked across the jungle to support strategic solutions.

A battle royale had commenced in the village & the SS (Strategic Solutions) team had managed to enter the village, but were unsure of how secure they were as they knew the DBR were camped out close by & in an unknown number.

A UN offical was badly injured during the seige on the village & needed urgent medical assistance & a medevac from the Mboma. SS had managed to rescue the doctor who was being held captive and he was doing his best to care for the aid worker but the clock was against him.

Sabre & zulu helped SS secure the village & were constantly probed by the DBR & their militia, the S.F. units eventually managed to push the enemy back enugh to buy them a window of oppertunity to evac the UN aid worker to the border for the evac, SS guided the SF part way to the border of cameroon. the SF troops continued the route to the border all in tact bar 3  losses. Strategic Solutions & the Special forces teams parted company & SS made their way back into the village to continue their work their.

Here TL's & Commanders will give their de breif's of the events of Operation Safe Haven:

To the Chairman of the International Revolutionary council.

Chairman,

The White Man has reneged on his deal! They do not care about the people of Africa, merely its wealth!
Before noon, before we had even had time to exert our presence in Mboma, the White Man had landed his helicopters and was terrorising the local villages. They came in and stole our children!

Under the guise of UN Doctors, they duped the village elders into letting them in, before their reinforcements arrived. But we did not let them stay! We pushed throughout the day and night - never letting up, never stepping back.

We attacked them for 24 hours solid, probing their perimetres, sounding out their defences with coordinated attcks. After a day of relentless battle, when the ground was stained by the blood of the innocent African at the hands of the murderous white Man, we forced them to withdraw to their helicopters with their tales between their legs! We were victorious!

We rescued our children from the Godless Westerners, and and slayed their UN torturers! We destroyed their vehicles, and killed a dozen of their soldiers who were too slow in fleeing to their helicopters! This was a great victory - they will see that their betrayal can only lead to their own deaths! We are Africans - we will defend our soil with anything that comes to hand - including our own lives!

But they have also shown us their hand; as long as we are in Africa, they will come for us. They will hunt us down like dogs! But while they are regrouping, we should push on - give them less ground to hunt us on and give us more ground from which to drive them out of Africa.

They may have helicopters, guns and money - but as long as we are African we have the resolve!
We have pushed on to Katanga, and you will hear of our struggle here in due course.
Your friend in the Congo,
Francis Chikumwe.

Subject: Debrief - Safe Haven
From: TL (Acting) Zulu 4-4

Zulu 4-4 was airlifted to target via Bell JetRanger (NATO designation: OH-58 Kiowa), during which the target area was surveyed from the air. No hostiles were spotted, although this was largely due to dense vegitation and a thick canopy over the forest. The LZ had been secured by Zulu 3-3 prior to Zulu 4-4's insertion, and consequently Zulu 4-4 was able to proceed on mission without sustaining any contacts at the LZ.

Zulu 4-4 proceeded South on route to secure an additional vehicle and supplies which had been airdropped into the combat zone earlier. This consisted primarily of rations, extra ammunition, and an Argocat 8x8 all-terrain vehicle.

The patrol remained covert the entire way, with no contacts sustained. Once the supplies were secured, Zulu 4-4 moved to the village to assist Sabre 6-6, who were engaged in a heavy firefight against DBR rebels who were attempting to capture UN workers based there. Once Zulu 4-4 had deployed, the firefight was resolved quickly due to the additional weight in numbers. It became immediately apparent that the UN worker that it was our task to extract had been seriously injured in the fighting and would need extraction by vehicle after immediate medical attention.

Whilst waiting for a UN medic to be drafted in who would allow the UN worker to stay alive long enough to make it to a hospital across the border where better aid could be given, the village was attacked several times by DBR rebels. The decision was made by UKSF command to send out patrols to ascertain the origin of these attacks and provide a marauding force to take out DBR patrols before they reached the base. Some of these patrols were successful, others were not.

One such patrol went very wrong, when two soldiers were seriously injured when the four partisan troops they were on patrol with turned-coats and attacked them. This could not have been predicted, but after this event it was made clear that the partisans could not be trusted and were to be engaged on sight.

Zulu 4-4 also took a marauding patrol towards the direction of the DBR base, and although the base itself was not located, Zulu 4-4 ambushed a DBR patrol, killing one of the turncoat partisans that had injured their comrades only a few hours earlier. The DBR patrol withdrew from the contact, back towards the village where they were wiped out by Sabre 6-6 who had remained in position there. No other contacts were sustained on the patrol.

Zulu 4-4 then remained in position at the village to cover the UN worker, who was now being treated by a medic. Zulu 4-4 prepped the UN worker for extraction on a stretcher, which was later loaded on to a Wolf XD for Casevac.

Zulu 4-4 covered the village throughout the night, adding to the squads firepower by making use of a WMIK brought in by Sabre 1-1.

Come daylight, Zulu 4-4 launched a patrol North to check that the extraction route for UKSF was clear. No contacts were sustained, and 4-4 returned to the village to report in and stand by for extraction and casevac the UN worker.

The convoy left the village at 1100hrs local time, and drove through the jungle North to the border. All contacts sustained on route were successfully repelled. The casualty was extracted across the border without further incident, but misunderstood orders on the part of Zulu 4-4 and left without a radio, three members of the squad remained in position covering the convoy for too long. While the majority of UKSF escaped covertly, these three were surrounded by a company sized Congolese DBR contingent, and after an extensive firefight, they were all killed in action.

This is unfortunate, but ultimately the mission objectives were all met and this can only be viewed as a success for UKSF.
