3 Day Combat Mission
Location: Bangui, Central African Republic
Several organised militia groups associated with Ex-Seleka and backed by Azearian State have attempted a violent coup in the Central African Republic.
Their first target was the Bangui M’Poko Airport on the outskirts of the city where many civilians were killed following attacks on the terminal buildings. Other civilians and airport security staff were also taken hostage.
Local news then reported several light aircraft landing on the airstrip, followed by the arrival of trucks carrying troops, weapons and ammunition. Azearian State later claimed responsibility for the organisation of the attacks, and it has been assessed that representatives of AS were flown in to oversee the coup.
Since the initial attacks, militia fighters have effectively laid siege to the CAR capital, where they have captured several government buildings, displaced hundreds of civilians and taken further hostages.
President Faustin-Archange Touadera has been secured in a safe-house within the city centre, and has requested international assistance. TF29, currently on contingency response in Central Africa, have been deployed to a small military base on the eastern outskirts, where they are preparing for operations to stop the coup and return order to the capital.
