15-16 October 2016
Location: Ati, Batha Region, Chad
Following a year of extreme civil unrest after the collapse of the Camohammed administration, the Batha region of Chad has been plunged into violent conflict. A network of well organised Azearian State fighters, supported and supplied by Boko Haram via Cameroon, have virtually taken over the previous seat of Government in Chad.
Camohammed’s disappearance from the political stage has left the region with no effective control. Following a reduction of SOTF-Chad troops last spring, the area has descended into chaos, with warlords vying for control of each district. The arrival of the Azearian State and increasing violence from the KOA has upped the pressure on the Kanem Brotherhood, a remnant of the KGB, now attempting to form an interim government in N’Djamena.
AS and their counterparts within Boko Haram, bolstered by the success of their attacks against the Cameroonian military in Mayo-Sava, have continued to find ways of smuggling weapons and fighters across the border into Chad and funnelling them towards Ati.
Intelligence sources have assessed this is the start of a large scale offensive aimed to bring the entire Batha region under Azearian State control. If the AS leaders can unite tribal warlords, the city of Ati could quickly become an extremist stronghold.
The Pentagon and Vauxhall have shown concern at the prospect of trying to return stability to Chad while the Kanem Brotherhood struggles for control of the Chadian capital. HUMINT has claimed the Brotherhood’s main concern is restabilising N’Djamena as the true seat of power, protecting the financial security of Kanem itself, while seemingly ignoring the rising humanitarian crisis developing in Ati.
Downing Street press releases this week have stated that if the Chadian government is unwilling or unable to end this crisis then once again NATO will be forced to intervene.
