Iraq is moving steadily out of the headlines and Afghanistan is the main front for the West to wage their War on Terror. Money and religion are the key reasons the Taleban and anti-coalition militias are resorting to insurgent tactics to attempt to rid the Afghan plains of the ‘capitalist aggressor'. The Taleban has realised that the West's military capability and hardware outweighs their own and has therefore had to resort to guerrilla hit and run and IED (improvised explosive device) tactics to level the playing field. As such, the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) units face a difficult challenge to bring freedom to the people of Afghanistan. The situation in Helmand Province highlights the wants and needs of both sides- up to 90% of the world's heroin traces its roots back to Afghanistan and the poppy fields of Helmand; the West want to cut out the supply and the Afghans and Taleban want to keep a firm hold on their income source.

Garmser in the south, is a town that has regularly fallen under Taleban control since Operation Mountain Thrust in 2006, only to be liberated and fall again. It is a major trade route for the opium sellers to ship into Pakistan and therefore a strategic point for the Taleban to control to provide a revenue supply to fund their attempts to retake Afghanistan for their own. Some villagers and tribal elders are happy for this arrangement as it brings security to their trade and are sympathetic to the cause.
ISAF have been monitoring the situation in the South of Helmand and are aware of this hostility to their presence, not only in Garmser but also in neighbouring Naway-i-Barakazayi. As an attempt to win the hearts and minds of the local villagers they are moving in a humanitarian operation in Garmser, supported by a combined UK and US taskforce to provide a secure presence.
A number of high ranking military officers have questioned the worth of this mission and predict an aggressive response from the local community as well as the Taleban inhabitants to the threat on their prized cache.
